PEAK PERFORMERS ARE PEOPLE WHO...

  • DO MORE THAN EXPECTED - One characteristic of great performers is their commitment to the idea of “... and then some!” They do what’s required and then some. They meet expectations and then some. In contrast, underachievers approach everything with a “just get by” mentality. They do only what they have to in order to get by and nothing more.
  • TAKE ADVANTAGE OF NEW LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES - Underachievers live by the motto “I get my work done so I must know everything I need for my job.” Performers have a different view and are likely to say, “I have so much to learn if I’m ever going to exceed my current performance.”
  • EXUDE OPTIMISM FOR OVERCOMING LIFE’S CHALLENGES - A performer says, “It may be difficult, but it is possible.” A slacker says, “It may be possible, but it’s too difficult.” Peak performers don’t shrink back in times of adversity or professional challenge. They live by the optimism that sees great possibilities even in trying times.
  • PERFORM IN THE PRESENT AND LOOK TO THE FUTURE - Star performers learn the lessons of the past and plan for the future with great expectations. Yet the key to their success is a sense that the time to act is right now. Performers don’t live in the past or the future, they make things happen NOW!
  • TAKE INITIATIVE TO GET STARTED - Performers have a sense of mission. They know where they’re headed. They know what’s expected. They are focused and ready to take the initiative to get started. Underachievers have to be coaxed, prodded, and often monitored to make sure they’re getting work done. Peak performers are after results and do what it takes to make them happen.
  • DETERMINE TO IMPROVE YOUR ATTITUDE - B.C. Forbes was right when he said, “Whether we find pleasure in our work or whether we find it a bore depends entirely upon our mental attitude towards it, not upon the task itself.” Most people, over their career, will hold several different positions, each with varying degrees of fulfillment or frustration. Remember, the one common denominator to all those positions is: YOU! Your attitude toward your work will make all the difference.
  • DECIDE TO PERFORM WITH EXCELLENCE - Ralph Waldo Emerson, reflecting on his career, said, “ I have never received a promotion in my life that I could not trace directly to recognition that I had gained by rendering more service and better service than that for which I was paid.” Deciding to do your best always results in both financial and personal rewards.
  • DEVELOP A STRONG WORK ETHIC - J.C. Penney said, “Give me a stock clerk who wants to work and I will give you a person who will make history. Give me a person who does not want to work, and I will give you a stock clerk.” If you want to propel your success and your personal satisfaction to new heights, learn to apply yourself faithfully and diligently to your work.
